John Corigliano has only written one traditional opera to date, as part of a Metropolitan Opera campaign to commission operas from composers known for their symphonic writing but who had not previously written an opera. However, that opera, The Ghosts of Versailles, has already had a revival at the Met and a second production, a rarity for a contemporary American work. Despite Ghosts's popularity, however, Corigliano has said that he has no plans to compose a second opera. Corigliano studied with Otto Luening at Eastman.
